@ImpChan I mean, I think there are definitely systems where background gets built up-front and if you don’t do it… it could be hard to play from that starting point. I personally tend toward, “Give me a little info, and also anything you tell me is a hook I can use later on…” @ImpChan But really, I just think the whole, “You’re Playing It Wrong,” vibe of RPG Twitter is tiresome. Grognards don’t NEED to tell everyone they’re playing elfgames wrong—they just *think* they do, because they refuse to get therapy or whatever. 😉

If we could filter that, what would even be left? https://t.co/khjKJKyqKy (Like, yeah, heavy backstory isn’t how I tend to roll with trad FRPGs—I might even say, “Don’t get too attached to your character!”—and as a GM I’d want bullet points rather than extended backstory fiction, but… to each group their own, ffs.)

@themarkrussell Around 2006 someone from the bank came to my school to offer foreign faculty credit cards. Prior to that, it was always no no no. I was soon after able to also get a Samsung card. There’s more rigmarole, though. You can’t apply at the little kiosks like at Costco, etc. @themarkrussell (When Costco switched to only accepting some other card a few years back, I made a half-hearted attempt to get whatever new card they’d switched to, hit a brick wall, and shrugged and abandoned the effort.)

I do wonder what former colony’s culture the countercultural Brits of this era would have coopted more heavily instead, if for whatever reason they hadn’t been so gung-ho about watering down (Hindu) culture and beliefs. Burmese? West African? Native Australian? Pan-Caribbean? (That said, theres a long history of fascination with India in Britain so… it’d have probably taken a lot to make that happen.)

I never really cared much about the Beatles but George Harrison’s ALL THINGS MUST PASS is high on my list of great albums. I assume my mom bought it for “My Sweet Lord” but “The Ballad of Frankie Crisp” is really the highlight for me (though many tracks just sing). Also, I grew up with this format (triple cassette, IIRC?) and cover. It’s way more “English Eerie”-looking than the cover that usually comes up for this album online. (Apparently the image was included as a poster with the LPs, which I’ve never even seen.)

(It’s very telling how those people trot out the same rhetoric that was used to justify control and regulation of women and racial minorities in the past: “hormones… no self-control… ignorant… simple-minded… need control…”) Anyway, this moronic uproar about TURNING RED is at the intersection of bigotry toward the young + bigotry toward girls and women. Both elements seem to be in play. But, eh, “Someone is being a bigoted moron on the internet!” is a perennial observation, I suppose.

I suspect it’s actually as much about bigoted attitudes toward kids as it is sexism. If you mushroom kids, you justify “controlling” them.

@GeekinKorea I had students who literally told me that they do no want to talk about food (first time ever) because they feared “conflict” if the discussion turned to how one ought to serve 탕수육. I was like, “Ask for a second bowl, serve half each way: problem solved. Next?” @GeekinKorea My wife tells me it’s a whole thing, though. And, predictably, it’s about sadistic elders insisting only one way is the right way and forcing it on everyone else at the table, because of course it is. Still… talk about division, if even talking about food is off-limits now…

@GeekinKorea I mean, It’s easy to get there when some proportion of your students ignore all guidelines and don’t adjust screen resolution while recording 2-3 hour long writing exams. Like… one student alone uploaded 8 GB of video once. @GeekinKorea This was one of those “Professor I totally ignored the exam guidelines but I think Zoom is crashing because Zoom is bad!” [No, if you reset your screen resolution it’d be fine.] “But I’ve done the exam five times please just accept my 5 GB file now or I’ll lose my mind…” (sigh)

@GeekinKorea Haha, I have 612 GB in mine. We had some kind of paid account with Google. Most of it is the video portions of students’ midterm and final exams over the last 2 years, though I think somewhere I backed up videos of my own lectures here for a while. @GeekinKorea Probably I just need to wipe my backup external boot drive temporarily and use it to collect the videos and then upload them to Youtube. The main problem is just that DLing this stuff and then offloading to Youtube in 30 Gig dumps would take FOREVER.

It’s also an interesting read in itself, just as a glimpse into another smaller expatriate population in Korea with a very different experience of this place… and yet with some actually surprising points of overlap. Anyway, it’s mostly academic: European neighbours are taking all the Ukranian refugees they can, while Ukranian military and cops are apparently telling Black (and other nonwhite?) foreign students they must stay and fight the Russians. FFS. 🙄

Anyway, according to this very recent paper on Syrian refugees in Seoul, only a little more than half of Koreans support taking refugees of any kind. Only a bit more than a quarter support taking Muslim refugees, though.

This crisis was basically only resolved by the government saying semantic games and letting them stay on a temporary “humanitarian visa”, but not really giving them refugee status.

Meanwhile, in South Korea, there has been an upswing in online discussions about helping refugees: on discussion boards, you can now see people w/o a previous interest now saying that Korea should accept more refugees because of the current situation in Ukraine. Korea’s surging pro-Ukraine support with the absurd, overwhelming degree of hostility toward Black/Muslim refugees in recent years. (A handful of Yemenis coming legally in 2018 set off a moral panic.)

Also a piece on why there are so many foreign students there. 76,000 is a lot of foreign students. A quarter of them are from Africa. Some have gotten out. Many apparently haven’t, can’t, or are scared to try.
