@tweetsbymoi Summarizing the session made me really pity the PCs. They got food and water, fled to safety, realized it wasn’t safe, fled to maybe-safer safety, set up camp, cooked food, got attacked by giant ants, and lost a party member as they fled, losing the food. “Isle of Joy” like hell!

As of a few days ago, >50% of S. Korean kids 0-9 officially have had COVID. (No vaccine for kids 0-4 is available here, but the one for kids 5-11 is… now. Officials put off the start of vaccinating kids 5-11 till a month into the school year…)
https://t.co/StEm2wOYWf (… knowing full well that many kids would be attending and likely exposed, and that many parents would have no choice but to send them.)

@koryodynasty When, at a past university job, a student came to me about it because admin refused to do anything, I learned from other faculty that it was a recurring problem: they’d had students come to them too. Admin was like, “We can’t do anything.” Which is code for, “We could but won’t.” @koryodynasty Long story short, I tried three or four different ways to get it addressed and none resulted in any action. Students ended up with nothing but word of mouth. Even explaining clearly how it could damage the exchange program or bring bad press didn’t result in action or concern.

Oh, and C.L. Moore’s very odd Doomsday Morning, which has a kind of eerily prophetic clarity to it when it comes to the awfulness of social networks and the role of art and performance in resistance to authoritarian power. Ooops, I guess it would help to link the post, too.

No sure why this post from 2019 never got published, but there are so many interesting books I have to share it. Almost all of the books (except for the ones that were not for me) have stuck with me, but especially the Minsoo Kang’s Hong Gildong translation, @victorlavalle’s Ballad of Black Tom, and @KameronHurley’s The Stars Are Legion.

@GeekinKorea 🙂 I bet those are some interesting conversations. @GeekinKorea I have occasionally asked them to cook something they’ve never cooked before (and film themselves doing it, video blog style) as a preparatory step to the unit on Process Writing.
There’s a fair bit of “Ramyeon, but with a few veggies added,” but also some off the wall stuff! -
@xtinehlee I don’t have any amazing insights either, but shoring up the crumbling barrier between work & life and reclaiming energy that the latter seems to insist on sapping from the former has helped a lot. Storytime and cooking together and being more present. Less doomscrolling. @xtinehlee I will also saying getting back to an old hobby of mine (tabletop RPGing with friends regularly) has been relatively sanity-preserving… and thank goodness it’s easy to do online.

@Ben_UK_KR True. But I would understand people struggling to adjust to GDocs from HWP a lot more, since at GDocs doesn’t emulate HWP’s interface almost entirely, y’know? @Ben_UK_KR Our LMS borks the formatting on anything except PDFs anyway, so HWP files were never going to happen. Plus the fonts used in HWP often totally mess up formatting in English texts. Since time immemorial, submitting an HWP file earns an automatic F on the assignments in my class.

Not that things are perfect here—far from it—but I was shocked when I arrived in South Korea to discover how many of those things are included under basic coverage here, that aren’t in Canada. twitter.com/AmitAryaMD/sta…

How much y’all wanna bet the tune Dr. Ma’s singing modulates to, “Oh, everyone should have been more careful, personal responsibility is the issue…” as cases of Long COVID start to hit the media and people start needing long term treatment and support? twitter.com/hyunsuinseoul/…
