@MarieMyungOkLee That’s nonsense. Resident non-Koreans are ~4% of the total population, and only a handful have been found having broken quarantine. Many more Koreans have broken quarantine throughout.
Racist news reportage (as always) creates the impression it’s a “foreigner problem.” @MarieMyungOkLee It’s the same thing with xenophobic crime reportage here. The newspapers love to report that “foreigner crime is a growing problem.” They never pause to mention that the current rate is higher, but (in almost all categories) lower than the national average.
And I dunno that it can be framed as “media failed these people” so much as, “Social media has offered a lot of people a fantasy land of easy answers and specific, concrete ‘bad guys’; this attracts some people who want to feel less powerless, scared, hopeless, and confused.” UItimately, many have just given up on facts, complexity, and uncertainty. It’s definitely not new to the pandemic, but recent stress, anxiety, and burnout have accelerated/broadened it. (Everywhere, not just in Canada.)
What do do about it, I have no idea, though.

I realized one lack: some “factions” are tied to locales, but don’t constantly STAY there. “Occupied” locations need a faction-specific table, “What’s up here?”, for random roll/GM inspiration… to avoid “You arrive, the whole faction’s here,” or “Quick, GM, make something up!” (I mean, “Quick, GM, make something up!” isn’t too hard if you’re experienced, but I think some people would appreciate tables, if only as “cool idea” prompts beyond what they might think of themselves on the spot. That’s what tables are for, after all…)
Playtesting a castaways adventure with the Sunday night group these days. Enjoying it so far and realized some things I could add to improve it. Players immediately stumbled onto the weird cultists, of course. They survived. “Whew, got *that* out of the way…” It’s been a stream of hijinks, mysteries, and evasions and oh man, the bad luck rolls. (Jungle is slow going/densely populated but also, I wanted to test out the contents of the tables, so we were using luck rolls once per hex—but not all the randoms are hostile or dangerous.)

@mcjulie In 2020, I saw many childless people using “think of the kids” nonsense (“masks ruin social skills, poor kids!” etc.) to justify COVID-skeptic nonsense. It was very clueless and transparent, and they ignored how kids were mostly fine with masks, etc. @mcjulie *Actual* parents were more tired, worried, and sympathetic about their kids’ social deprivation and fears and stress back then.
But burnout has set in, and so that’s changed somewhat in the last few months especially, I’ve noticed.
@mcjulie Some probably also struggle with actual feelings of failure.
It’s almost certainly easier to buy into, “Ah, well, it’s inevitable, we’re all gonna catch it…” and then, like a cascade, you buy into the rest of the zero-mitigation ideas in a fell swoop. @mcjulie (Like, as with religion, people often internalize the rest of the packaged set of ideas that go with it: “indefinite measures” and “masks harm kids” and all the other nonsense. Justification and rage is WAY easier than admitting desperation/confusion.)
@mcjulie About angry *moms* specifically, I imagine partly it’s talking about their real frustrations isn’t socially acceptable: you must “handle” much of the extra parenting while working from home, & never tire of spending all day with your kid daily. You *must* “succeed” parentally. @mcjulie The pressure to “handle it” & the social unacceptability of calling out your unsupportive spouse, family, government, etc, but also the unacceptability of being “burned out” and not some font of maternal energy… the label “bad mother” or “failure” looms.
@blackgaygemini Framing of the discussion (i.e. pedagogy) is a big part of why this happens. I *just* posted about two books that discussed this in terms of Creative Writing teaching, but I imagine some of the insights are v. transferrable!
