I’m curious to know more about that boom and how/when it busted. I suspect it’s just a case of declining sales and rising costs, but details would be interesting. As a kid, I got these mostly as remaindered hardbacks from local mall bookstores, which maybe says a lot. A few remain in print and available: Brian Froud’s various fairy books, especially. But this is a genre of popular publishing that probably fell prey to all kinds of rising costs… Though who knows, maybe boutique editions and crowdfunding could bring them back…

I was tempted to bring more, but they’re heavy in baggage so I could only bring a few big books. Some of the troll stuff is legitimately creepy. The Secrets of the Gnomes, even moreso.

Something finally being done about Ottawa (sort of) but how long will it be until that $100,000 fine and year of jail time they’re planning to legislate won’t soon be used against land defenders and other legitimate protests sooner, rather than later.

@iampaulkerry Oh, so basically like that video game curfew that only affected games on Korean servers, so the kids who hadn’t created IDs using their parents’ IDs just switched to games on foreign networks or consoles or Steam or whatever? My students are all like, “That was the dumbest law.” @iampaulkerry Though I will say I’ve been here long enough to remember when the telecom commission essentially blocked ALL of Blogspot. (Because a few blogs had posted a video of a Korean being beheaded in Iraq and the government wanted to contain the political blowback.)
It was specifically to help keep the house cleaner, and it did. The floors were vacuumed and mopped, but this meant it didn’t have to be every damn day. With the amount of snow we got, nobody really wanted to wear their winter boots into the house most of the year anyway. I vaguely remember some Japanese-American character on TV (Arnold on Happy Days?) asking confused white characters to remove their shoes at his door, as a gag. It baffled me. (“Wait, people actually wear outdoors shoes inside their houses? Why? How? But…”)
About that stupid article about keeping your shoes on in someone’s shoes-off home, that has now got half of Twitter talking like this is a universal, monolithic “white people thing”: yeah, not really. I grew up with shoes off at home. (No broken toes.) And yeah, of course you $@&%ing take your shoes off at the door if someone asks you to. Who refuses, let alone lectures them, when they’re in the position of being a guest in that person’s home? That’s just barbaric.
