Don’t love The Telegraph, but Bed of Lies Season 2: Blood is worthwhile. Not that it’s news in COVID times, but boy does that story illustrate why capitalism and public health can make for a downright toxic mix.
https://t.co/TMk884iBKr There were so many jaw-dropping moments in the series, but it’s not sensationalized. It’s just that the politicians, health authorities, and companies were so incredibly callous and awful at every step of the way. (Especially the companies.)

So up to 1/4 of mobile phone traffic in Canada is spam calls. I wonder what the number is in Korea?
(Similar, I guess. Most calls I get are 070 spam numbers that I ignore, and that never call me again. Though it’s less now with an anti-spam call app.)

@StevenWard @iampaulkerry It was a system that doubtless cost a huge amount to buy. It was installed and never properly set up, not even just setting internal clock. It was literally useless. (We never found footage of the student who’d threatened my wife. ☹️ And I’d bet they didn’t fix it after, either.)

@StevenWard @iampaulkerry I mean, the frequency with which I am told, “the password is “admin” or “1234567890” suggests it wouldn’t be hard to get admin privs on a lot of networks that people assume nobody would bother to hack. @StevenWard @iampaulkerry Security setup is usually disappointing.
I once had to search campus CCTV footage for a person passing through one of three specific places at a specific time. It was impossible: none of the cameras were timestamped correctly; some where hours out of synch.

@iampaulkerry I dunno, in this article they seem to claim it’s the hardwired central interface for answering the door, calling the elevator, calling the security office, etc. There’s even a photo of the built-in system you see in most modern apartments.

@StevenWard Yeah, the part I’m wondering about is whether this is real, or whether a reporter took someone’s brag of hacking almost every apartment in Korea for granted or if someone really does have a bunch of footage.
Or are they supposedly selling live access? I dunno. @StevenWard Like… that’s a lot of sitting and parsing footage. I… kinda have to wonder how much they actually have.
But it’s certainly a security hole that needs to be plugged, assuming it’s real. 🙁

Hm, my list: I dig Adam Neely—I think he was the first music theory Youtuber I got into. Solid mix of jazz, conservatory, critique, big picture questions, Q&A. @KenMcConnell @marc_laidlaw @jeremiahtolbert A lot of the music theory people I got into are through him. Tantacrul’s critique of music notation software is not to be missed (if you use notation software, anyway). Nahre Sohl’s exploration of other genres as a classical-trained pianist/composer is weirdly fascinating.

(I dunno how credible IT Chosun is, but they’re claiming darkweb spycam hackers accessed the video feeds from apartment comm systems in many apartments across Korea and are trading spycam footage.) Either way, I’m unsettled by how plausible it sounds, given the spycam epidemic here and usually lax security standards.
(Apparently the apartment comm system manufacturers have in the past protested proposed laws requiring this stuff be more secure, because it increases costs.)

@KaeLynnKLS @Chuckchuckpaksa @koryodynasty But the mainstream test prep materials are exactly like this too… and are written by people who generally need native speakers to edit it so it isn’t outright nonsensical or ungrammatical. (Or worse.) @KaeLynnKLS @Chuckchuckpaksa @koryodynasty (There have been occasions where, editing test prep materials, I’ve had to point out that someone unwittingly used material from a source propagandizing pseudoscience or anti-science ideas, or, oh yes, worse.)

@GeekinKorea I forgot about the perils of quicksand! And yeah, total nuclear annihilation was a BIG topic of anxious discussion on the grade school playground. We “knew” that being halfway between Russia and the Eastern USA, northern Saskatchewan would be drenched in “Star Wars” nuke debris. @GeekinKorea I was going to say “stranger danger” but actually, after some of my experiences in Yeokgok and on Line 1 in Seoul, and in the occasional cab… yeah, no, stranger danger is a thing I have had to think about sometimes.
