@CarlAtteniese @RepMTG By coincidence, I recently read Eric Hobsbawm’s Barbarism: A User’s Guide and while not without questionable leaps, omissions, & assumptions, it kinda felt like it tackled this question… not just for the US, but for all post-colonial democracies in the West (& beyond).
