@JustinHowe @ArchivistsAlley Wait, that’s “The Return of…” so probably not the first…. Hm. @JustinHowe @ArchivistsAlley Here you go: “LEFT FOOT OF WRATH.”

@JustinHowe @ArchivistsAlley Yeah, I think I saw three of them during the festival. They were fun. Which was a big deal in those days, non-Koreans couldn’t reserve tickets online. (Because why would anyone bother to set that up for an international film festival, right?)
Might be able to stream them now? @JustinHowe @ArchivistsAlley There were also some knockoff Sukeban (girl gang) movies, too, but they were not as fun as the metal foot guy. @JustinHowe @ArchivistsAlley Ah, you can stream the first one at least:
-
@JustinHowe @ArchivistsAlley Oh, and since I also posted it on Twitter (terrible as it is):
-
@JustinHowe @ArchivistsAlley The ones that stick out most in my memory were basically old-fashioned kung-fu westerners set in Manchuria, from the 왼발 series. @JustinHowe @ArchivistsAlley The hero’s famous for an amazing left foot (i.e. kick) used to beat up the Japanese villains. Who then proceed to amputate the foot… … so he replaces it with a prosthetic METAL FOOT and then REALLY “kicking” ass. Ridiculous but fun. There was a whole series.

@JustinHowe @ArchivistsAlley Ha, first hit when I searched on google for it with my name was… your site:
https://t.co/QL8NI2wQb5
It still hangs on the wall by my desk at work. Still regret not swiping the other for you on screening day; by the next morning, someone taped another poster over & ruined it. @JustinHowe @ArchivistsAlley As for old Korean film posters, when the PIFAN festival was still tun by the founders (before they got booted for momentarily forgetting the mayor’s name and the festival was ruined) they screened a bunch of old movies and had the posters on display. It was fun.

@GeekinKorea I’ve asked the Ministry of Immigration, “Can you skip our middle names so we can have access to basic online services here? I’ve been waiting almost 20 years for the name entry issue to be fixed, and it’s clear it’s not going to be.” @GeekinKorea “But your name needs to match your name in your passport.”
“But the rest of the planet doesn’t force people to use their full name as their username on government, banking, and shopping websites, because it causes too many problems.”
“Nothing we can do about it.” -
@GeekinKorea It’s almost always this kind of thing, both in terms of, “We fixed the problem here, but not over here,” and also in terms of, “Who needs more than 30 spaces to enter their name?” I mean… lots of people do. I do! @GeekinKorea One thing I think the gov’t should implement is letting non-Koreans taken Koreanized (Hangeul) names that represent only part of their name. Like, skipping middle names, etc. Problem is nobody’s willing to take responsibility for the hassle.

Call me naïve but I’ve never actually seen someone sell out his own grandma. (Always just thought it was a figure of speech, but nope, there are indeed people that shitty.) twitter.com/saletan/status…

@SFRuminations @JustinHowe Wait, wait, there’s a company doing repros! And…
It’s the same folks who make tubaxes! 🙂
wessex-tubas.com/products/bb-op…
That’s way cheaper than a bass sax.
-
@SFRuminations @JustinHowe Yeah, it’s a very clever trick if you can pull it off, and have an audience that gets what you’re doing at a pretty high level. I think we’re not really so much in a world where that works as well, though, speaking from experience as someone who tends naturally toward this mode.
-
@SFRuminations @JustinHowe I would assume also, like the cantus firmus trick, it’s a kind of “ballsy” move, too: you demonstrate mastery of the stuff that’s been done and then take it one step more. Like, because it’s hard enough to master what’s been done before in the first place, that was valued too.
-
@SFRuminations @JustinHowe Right, and also people just conceived of creativity in a way that didn’t necessarily denigrate “derivative” work the way we sometimes do. My favorite example is how many masses used the melodies of drinking songs for a cantus firmus. So many “Missa l’homme armé” out there!
-
@JustinHowe @SFRuminations Which of course shows some people even in oral traditions had a feeling of ownership over their songs/lyrics, but… others didn’t seem to necessarily think that way. There was a range of opinions, but some remixing or changing was difficult to prevent. @JustinHowe @SFRuminations We’ve just sort of arrived in a place where the opposite is true: an author like Lovecraft saying to his friends, “Remix my stuff in your stories!” is unusual, whereas if you go far back enough, that was how vast amounts of writing was done. Or that’s my (amateur!) understanding.
-
@JustinHowe @SFRuminations Which isn’t surprising: in an oral tradition, some degree of shuffling and decay is inevitable. This book really blew my mind in terms of alternate conceptions of creative work:
https://t.co/11HjNC8mbu
(free to read online!) @JustinHowe @SFRuminations You had troubadours who were like, “Hey, think you can remix this shit? Go for it!” Then you had others who were using tricky schemes like using homophones (deer/dear) in the last line of one verse and the first of the next to make sure people didn’t mess up their songs.
-
@JustinHowe @SFRuminations You got me curious, since “Lai” is a term sometimes used for songs, and I stumbled onto this:
https://t.co/RYToBaFBDx
See especially paragraph 14 and the footnote attached to it! That’s just one paper, though, and for other works, it’s claimed she translated Latin or English… @JustinHowe @SFRuminations But my impression is that vast amounts of writing has always been something like what we’d call “fanfic”: the idea of someone (or an institution) having sole ownership of a narrative or characters is, in the bigger scheme of things, pretty recent and anomalous, I think.

Wow, this is insane to the point of abusiveness. (Thread on F2F course policies this semester at University of Toronto.) twitter.com/DFisman/status…

@JustinHowe Is it new? My first (assigned) expat roommate in Korea tried to prude-shame me for wanting a detailed discussion of “self-pleasure” techniques. I was like, “Do you call *everyone* a prude for not wanting to discuss this with you?”
This was at my birthday party, no less. @JustinHowe (Which, yeah, not our first meeting, but I’d only known him a few months. This was the same guy who, on day 3 or 4 of my working there, was loudly reminded not to download porn on the last working shared office computer because he’d malware it up like he’d done the other one!)

Oooh, I didn’t know this was out! twitter.com/Nocturnia_Blog…

Here’s what it looks like! The art, by Gonzalo Aeneas (instagram.com/gonzaloaeneas/), is stunning, and the layout by @vyderac is superb! Available from
@lotfp now! -
My long-awaited adventure, FERMENTVM NIGRVM DEI SEPVLTI, is one of the new books now out from LotFP! #osr #rpg
https://t.co/0PeOV4aEv9 If an OSR adventure set in an abbey and its brewery on the Belgian border appeals—or you like weird beer in your games—check it out!
It’s been a long time coming, first drafted in 2015. Feels like a different century now.
-
@JustinHowe Honestly it was what I suspected until one day I found a book I wanted checked out! But as I say, the collection’s good enough it can’t just be 100% show. Someone in acquisitions likes English language horror, enough to buy smaller press stuff. @JustinHowe I mean I guess it’s possible someone’s using library acquisition recc lists from elsewhere but it’s the genre is specifically horror and not other popular fiction genres, which is odd.

New Appendix K: THE PIRATES: https://t.co/hJM4kzwlkt If you’re interested in Korean-flavored pirate adventure, this one’s for you. Oh, and somehow last week was so busy I forgot to share the last installment: Garoojigi’s probably too risqué for most groups to transplant directly into games, but it’s a decent template/inspiration for how a magic item could generate chaos in a village: hallofadventures.com/garujigi-a-tal…

I assumed this was an excerpt from netizen discussions: someone always finds a way to turn an assailant into a victim, one or another way. But apparently this was a newscaster on publicly funded national news saying, “Pretty women shouldn’t be secretaries”? JFC. SMH. https://t.co/aehUnXkMGw I’m assuming this is in response to the Mayor of Seoul killing himself in the face of a sex harassment scandal?
