  • Funny what a little focused attention can lead to, huh? twitter.com/starvancouver/…

  • @GeekinKorea I would tell the student they need to PARK if they want to be counted as present in class, and that they’re either breaking the law (if they’re paying sufficient attention to count as present) or they’re not not really present (and are distracting others). @GeekinKorea Also, most platforms have a way to boot someone from a video chat room if they’re doing something inappropriate. I’d do that, after warning the student, and telling them they can return once they’ve parked. @GeekinKorea That said, I did once videorecord an example rant while driving for my Presentation class. But I had my eyes on the road and just ranted while driving. When I had to address the class directly I pulled over and parked. *shrug*

  • Interestingly, my wife says she thinks there was something in the South Korean news recently about a rash of credit card fraud charges from North Carolina…

  • @EZ_4mylife I’m very curious why my credit card in South Korea got a charge today by your company. As far as I know, you have no reason to be issuing me a charge, but I’m all ears. The charge would have been issued about 20 minutes ago. @EZ_4mylife At least, your company is what came up when I searched the name attached to the charge: EFFICIENT SOLUTIONS, RALEIGH.

My credit card company told me there are often charges issued to Korean cards from this account which card owners describe as fraudulent.

  • @GeekinKorea What the hell is altermeat? Sounds like Altar Meat.

  • @jeremiahtolbert Thanks! It’s not the only way to play: most people are just doing the journaling, without embedding it in a narrative context. (But also lots of feels in a lot of other people’s postings.) Worth checking the hashtag, some have really blown me away, and moved me.

  • @mythopoetica @JustinHowe Especially with all that rain in it!

  • @GeekinKorea Thanks! I’ll probably wait till after the storm, though. Too bad they don’t do midnight movies. Was it very busy when you went?

  • @mythopoetica @JustinHowe He’s slippery, that @JustinHowe. Blink for an instant and you’ll have yourself an empty lariat and he’ll have already grabbed your tea on the way out into the storm. @mythopoetica @JustinHowe

  • @GeekinKorea Yeah. I could accept the constant last minute deadline notifications if they were more humane about them. We were threatened with being forced into classrooms if we didn’t fill out a convoluted survey in quintuplicate (literally five times in a row, with no mistakes) last week.

  • @mythopoetica @JustinHowe Thanks! I’m pretty sure we’ll be okay…

  • @JustinHowe Hm. Now I’m glad we ordered groceries. We’re sort of on the path for the latter two predictions, I think? Not dead center but…

  • @GeekinKorea Yeah, that was my feeling about prerecorded classes. I mean… Zoom seems a bit… well, there’s a lot of muted mics and videos with no students onscreen. I don’t feel right requiring people show their faces, but… it sort of makes Zoom a pointless exercise. *shrug* @GeekinKorea Frankly prerecorded classes would be a better product for everyone. But apparently students objected on the grounds that “Professors will recycle videos” = “Professors will be slacking off” which… 🙁 Er, no?

  • @GeekinKorea Ah, that makes sense, though it sounds a little time intensive. I think I’m resigning myself to the system in Blackboard, because… well, it’s not quite broken enough to necessitate something else.

  • @GeekinKorea *nod* Yah, the way a lot of sysadmins do their thing around here I suspect it’s not an uncommon situation. Curious about the online grade system you built as a workaround. (I’ll probably use what we have but what a mess.)

  • @GeekinKorea Honestly, when I heard we’d been subject to DDoS attacks throughout the registration period, my immediate thought was, “Well, that’s one way for students to communicate their complaints.”

  • @JustinHowe wot ships worldwide no prizes ever ship worldwide… twitter.com/silviamg/statu…

  • @heavenspider @jeeyonshim @KevinKulp Looks like! Can’t wait to see how it works! 🙂

  • @heavenspider @jeeyonshim @KevinKulp Hmmm. Now you put the question, “But how?” in my head. And I need to sleep because I have an early class to teach tomorrow. Oh no!

  • @heavenspider @jeeyonshim @KevinKulp Been there myself!

  • @heavenspider Dunno if @jeeyonshim and @KevinKulp will be releasing Wait for Me someplace in September, but it’s a daily journaling game that’s quite suited to playing via Twitter. (And I’ve been finding it really fun, fascinating, and challenging.)

#WaitForMeRPG has many examples! @heavenspider @jeeyonshim @KevinKulp Or maybe a game of Lexicon?

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexicon_(…

You’d want other players to join you for that, though…

  • @HeerJeet *raises hand at mention of faculty* Also, vulnerable people who aren’t old.

Plus college students ride on buses and subways alongside plenty of vulnerable people.

The path to herd immunity is likely strewn with millions of corpses. Not that someone like Shapiro would care.

  • @GeekinKorea Yeah, it started raining where I am pretty soon after you posted that and, being not so far away, I thought, “Uh oh.”

  • @katemurray @layangabi Yeah, I was going to say, the Karp 5-S thing worked *shockingly* well for our little one.

Also, singing (mostly random made-up songs, in my case) helped a lot for settling.

  • @GeekinKorea Wait, what? Where? OMG! YOU MUST TELL ME!

  • @pintsizehorror Ha, now that you mention it… Though I was thinking more of a Micro Oneida Colony thing. And everyone ending up shrinking to the Quantum scale to escape, and becoming atomic-powered heroes locked in A Very Uncertain War… @pintsizehorror Meaning it never gets past script. Who’s gonna greenlight that?

  • @marc_laidlaw @DRAHALSEY The nice thing about using a DAW is you can copy and paste really quickly and easily. Beats rewriting pages of manuscript paper!

  • @pintsizehorror Ha, I fear the Microutopian Community spinoff ends up being a black comedy about how utopias go bad!

  • @mythopoetica Congrats! Also misread that as academic dream journal. Ha. “Had a nightmare about showing to tenure review and all my teeth fell out and my mother was the head of the committee…”

  • And yes, it’s the same session @GeekinKorea mentioned here:

    twitter.com/GeekinKorea/st…

  • My character was Patrick, a psychic slacker who learned fate is immutable. Finale: he ended up eating biocontaminated Dippin’ Dots to shrink himself so he could join a miniaturized utopian civilization living in the mall’s air duct system. (Spin off potential!) Portrait courtesy of thispersondoesnotexist.com by the way. Creepy tech, but a great character portrait resource if want photorealistic character images without using real people’s photos.
  • Had a great time the other day with @GeekinKorea @tweetsbymoi @JustinHowe @pintsizehorror in the writers’ room for MALL OF FAME, an imaginary bad (Baywatch-styled) 90s action TV show about mall cops, using @Ursidice’s Jump the Shark system. https://t.co/Qy43a1GFYh We didn’t actually “roleplay” the characters—more like writers working up plot synopses. Our show was horrible! Angry Swedes on skis! A trunkful of murder gear! Christians protesting satanic T-shirts! Rollerblader speedfreak! An evil child hacker named Oswald! Vehicular mishaps!
  • @DRAHALSEY @marc_laidlaw Me too!

  • @jeremiahtolbert Oh, I know I could do good work in the area, but I’m not really in a position to get more degrees so I could teach the subject, which is probably the only way one can do that kind of work. *shrug*

I do wish we had more time to try out stuff! Maybe once daycare’s available again?

  • @jeremiahtolbert I backed it! But I didn’t get the Roll20 version, only the physical version/PDF. (They funded enough to unlock the development of a cheapish smartphone app that substitutes for cards and Roll20 both, which is what I expect may be the best experience if cards aren’t possible.)

  • @jeremiahtolbert Yeah, I have a tendency to really overcomplicate things like plots so it’s been a big lesson for me.

  • @time_sock Thanks, really. Your latest one really hit me hard this afternoon too!

  • #WaitForMeRPG Day 13: stubborn isn’t a dirty word, but…
