  • @isasv (As in, last semester they’d have been fine as long as they kept up with the lecture video cycle. I’m not punishing people because admin decided to force us to do everything less efficiently in long “live” sessions.) @isasv I’ll also say it’s harder to hold students to a standard when most of the time, if you do, admin immediately starts pressuring you to make an exception. Not every time, but really often. “His case is special.” “Why?” “Because he got a good job.” “My students could have gotten…”

  • @isasv *shrug* Because entitlement?

(This kind of ridiculousness is actually bog-standard here—students email late in semester explaining they didn’t attend because they have a job. If they email at the end of semester? They get an F. Start of semester? We work something out, maybe.) @isasv Mid-semester? Well… it’s a pandemic, and I have provisions for students who cannot attend live. (Their max grade is capped, as a compromise out of fairness for other students, and recognition that online live class is stupid and it all should be prerecorded anyway.)

  • @tweetsbymoi I swear the first thing that ran through my head was, “It’s NOT a COVID,” in Arnold Schwartzenegger’s voice.

  • Dear Professor,

Now that we’re halfway through the semester I thought I’d notify you that I am working full time and cannot attend your class ever. Hopefully you will feel obligated to offer me a compromise instead of pointing out what the syllabus says about my situation.

  • @stratometaship @ahimsakerp Maybe a mad lab at the center of a well-gourded village? 😉

  • @GeekinKorea Yeah, there was a second expansion box where the idea was Ghostbusters International—GB sells franchise rights in other cities and countries. The rules updates made the game less rules-light and more typical of RPGs, and people didn’t like them as much. @GeekinKorea But the concept of Ghostbusters International is an excellent approach for RPGs. (That’s the one I took with the one-shot I wrote up for Ghostbusters Korea.)

Never run it but it looks fun. I’ll try pitch it again and see if the group’s interested.

  • @GeekinKorea But, oh, wow, looking at these standees, I’m amused and impressed:

    greywolf.critter.net/paper/pdf/Ghos…

  • @GeekinKorea I’ve seen it! Never used Savage Worlds for anything, though, and when I read the shorter version of the rules, I wasn’t really blown away, so I never looked closely. The good news is that the d6 version of the rules is really simple. Character generation is maybe 3 minutes long. @GeekinKorea (It’s just a simple d6 dice pool system—it may have been the first dice pool system, actually, not sure—except you’re *always* rolling a Fortune die as part of your pool.)

The original is a bit hard to get a print copy of, but there’s a good retroclone: drivethrurpg.com/product/232762…

Seriously, though, this person is so incredibly out of touch it’s kind of funny. https://t.co/kSgekhYEwx “It’s all relative! I have private school expenses to pay, and a mansion, and need Armani suits for work.”

“It’s all relative! I need a private jet, and my family is depending on the luxury bunker we’ve bought to get us through the 21st century.”

    Yeah—it’s not *all* relative.

  • @roundthebend58 @AddyPottle @WordsandGuitar Her last response is telling, though: “recognizing the past” doesn’t necessarily need to mean “steeped in guilt” but equating the two definitely is a handy way to justify refusing to bother. @roundthebend58 @AddyPottle @WordsandGuitar FWIW I was about to say:

I’m white, Canadian, but live abroad & don’t celebrate Thanksgiving. I also never needed to: I can celebrate the blessings in my life w/o being prompted by a government (much less a holiday that retroactively whitewashes history), and do so regularly.

  • @roundthebend58 @AddyPottle @WordsandGuitar At this point, you’re clearly making a huge effort to avoid acknowledging history, and trying to shame and insult anyone who says, “Yeah, maybe we shouldn’t have a national holiday that celebrates the many benefits of colonialism for white folks.” Not a very good look. @roundthebend58 @AddyPottle @WordsandGuitar Ah, the bravery of the white Canadian lady who blocks people who challenge her on the nonsense she spews online.

  • @roundthebend58 @AddyPottle @WordsandGuitar You’re sidestepping my point with insults and rudeness. It’s infantile & ignorant.

(But a common response when you point out to white people, “Hey, you’re being kinda ignorant about history and its lingering effects in our society.”) @roundthebend58 @AddyPottle @WordsandGuitar For example, not everyone in Canadian society is descended from settlers. Some are descended from people who got massively screwed over by the European settlement of North America. And my point is precisely that lots of people *don’t* consider this.

  • @roundthebend58 @AddyPottle @WordsandGuitar It’s actually pathetic that you don’t understand why anyone’s critical. The word “settlers” is right there in your tweet. The land wasn’t an empty wasteland; it was inhabited by people. Who got displaced and oppressed so that settlement/harvest could occur. @roundthebend58 @AddyPottle @WordsandGuitar Thus being critical isn’t “making” Thanksgiving “nasty,” it’s recognizing the inherent nastiness that was always there, but which some of us–apparently including you, Sandra—have been very energetically trained to ignore. It’s just really not that hard to understand if you try.

  • @mythopoetica That’s cool! I look forward to hearing some eventually! 🙂

  • @mythopoetica Ha, there’s a Youtube video guide to the solder job: it’s a notorious flaw in that piece of kit, sadly. I should be able to do it…

I find a lot of music gear is pretty heavily marked up here, but anyway I’m not really in the market for anything so I haven’t looked much.

  • @mythopoetica Oh, and for Moog. Yeah, ever since this:

    youtube.com/watch?v=iXq1iE…

… I’ve had to respect the Moog.

  • @mythopoetica Yeah, he’s got all kinds of gear. I have to imagine one can pick up stuff like that second-hand easily in NYC. Meanwhile, all I have for inputting stuff outside of my two EWIs is an MPK mini I need to solder a USB cable onto. Ha.

  • @mythopoetica Ha, well, I’m less into 80s music than anyone I know, mind. 🙂

  • @mythopoetica Yeah, there’s some really good players out there. Also, some really wacky groups that use it. It’s good for ruining weddings, for example. 🙂

    youtube.com/watch?v=yUEapz…

  • @mythopoetica When I got one, a former sax player friend said, “What is it, the 1980s?” But actually there’s some cool stuff being done with them these days. Though the one I consider the best model is now out of production, and the big manufacturers have shifted focus to hobbyists. :/

  • @mythopoetica Electronic Wind Instrument. Kind of a wind instrument synthesizer. Kinda used a lot in fusion, but also… *lots* of film soundtracks were done with these for a while. They add breath control/expressivity that keyboard synths generally lack.

    youtube.com/watch?v=LKWpz2…

  • @mythopoetica I think this is more aimed at electric guitarists, and it’s more tips/tricks for switching to bass or thinking like a bassist than anything else, but it might be useful when the time comes? (I watched it while messing around with bass lines on my EWI.)

    youtube.com/watch?v=kBIXDo…

  • @mythopoetica Electric bass guitar is fun! I did some in high school. I sucked but even so it was fun. (I’m sure it’s more fun when one doesn’t suck!)

The only thing was for me I started on a contrabass, and it never felt right to me. Always wanted to revert to contrabass left-hand position.

  • @GeekinKorea That looks pretty great!

  • @JustinHowe Hahaha, I didn’t see this before replying with details. I didn’t get into the most horrific things I’ve seen, only the craziest and the most ubiquitous horrors. @JustinHowe One of my worst is pureed tubers everywhere, plus honey mustard, hot sauce, ketchup, and mayo in this weird intersection of lines I was pretty sure would send me tumbling across reality and into Carcosa if I looked at it long enough.

  • @jeremiahtolbert The craziest “pile stuff on a pizza and call it innovation” that I’ve seen (here in Korea) was a foot-high pile of french fries on a pizza. @jeremiahtolbert Though way more ubiquitous (and horrid) is sweet potato pureee, or pureed potato. They LOVE that here. Not sure why. One has to specify, “No pureed potato or sweet potato please!” or people order it by default, absolutely convinced foreigners love it. So many sad expat faces. :/

  • @JustinHowe I don’t mean on the fly: I mean the moderator should have called for it, or, honestly, it should have been part of the ground rules of the debate. I mean, they added “Free Discussion,” as in, “Let the old men jabber for a while in unstructured nursing home argument.” @JustinHowe But I wouldn’t want to be the sound technician., switching on and off at the moderator’s direction. That’d be a really tense evening, especially once the brain rot of listening to this drivel set in.

  • @JustinHowe Seriously, I’m 15 minutes in and am like, “But why doesn’t the sound technician just mute the mic of the debater when the other debater starts speaking?” I mean, at least you wouldn’t have two old men shouting over one another.

  • @amayor @OptimoPrincipi I was going to post this! The First Fossil Hunters is one of the few books I’ve managed to read ing 2020, and I loved it! Thanks for writing it!

  • @GeekinKorea Yeah, I’m gonna have to try that too! Thanks for mentioning it!

  • @GeekinKorea You can also color code the backgrounds, if your head works that way. (I find this very helpful for certain things, like, “Student logged on but did not participate.”)

  • And it doesn’t bode well at all for our prospects for handling all the other, bigger crises that are heading down the pipe toward us at the moment. Not at all.

Not saying anything new, maybe. But I wanted it on record: people were saying this in 2020. (And yes, it’s not just kids at risk, but kids are vulnerable and dependent on us to make sensible decisions despite our stress and exhaustion and all that. Even in places where this is being handled best, I’m not really seeing much wisdom on an institutional level.)

  • There were saner voices: there are level heads now saying, “But we don’t know yet, so caution is advised.” They’re almost always ignored… and somehow the narrative becomes, “Nobody imagined this.” Yeah, no, some people did. You just ignored them.

It’s always been this way. (There have always been people who argued for ideas that the vast majority now pretend nobody ever imagined before last year.

(My wife observed frustratedly how you can hear the racist assholes of today lying to their grandkids, “*Everyone* thought that way in 2020!”)
