On protection: we know very little about this illness. It *could* have long term effects beyond the ones we already know some people suffer. It might not. But ranting about how keeping your kids home for a year or 18 months is “child abuse” is insane given the unknowns. And all the stuff about kids “needing” to socialize with their peers: you know, for most of human history, we did not corral children away with exact peers day after day for their parents’ convenience.
